Meeting the Writer Elizabeth Acevedo
y English course and another 10th class went on an excursion. It was at the “Silent Green” on 13.09.2019. This was a presentation for school classes to see the author Elizabeth Acevedo. She was there to read extracts of her new book “poet X”. She writes books about Latinx Americans and she is also one. I liked her reason to start writing: Acevedo was a teacher in America and she asked her students, who were also immigrants, why they don‘t like to read classical or modern books. And one girl answered: “because these books aren‘t about us or the people of color”, so she began writing books about them.
Furthermore, we could ask her questions, take photos and she gave autographs. My personal opinion is that the event was a good chance to become involved with literature without being bored because the author was very likable and cool. She answered the questions of the pupils very honestly. In addition, she read a few extracts of the book. It was spectacular to hear the way she read.
Besides, the event had another guest from a ‘Gymnasium’ in Berlin. She was a young girl of our age and she read her text which won a price for young literature. I am convinced that she wants to other students to write or maybe present what they wrote in public.
I think that the book “poet X” is very interesting. The book is about a young, 15-year-old Dominican girl who has very strict parents, which causes a few problems in her life. She lives with her family in America but especially her mother is very strict to her because the mother wants her daughter to become a good religious girl or even a nun. So the first problem is that she is questioning her faith. And the second one is her first love. These two things are two of the biggest taboo topics for Xiomara. Moreover, she is writing down all her thoughts and feelings in poems. What we read is her diary which is written in a verse style. Besides that the book is also about how to deal with sexism at a young age, which is in my point of view also a relevant topic in our society. I don‘t want to spoil you, so that‘s it about the plot of the book. In my opinion, it‘s a very good book. It has an interesting topic and background. Therefore I bought this book at the event and I already read it. I liked the poems because they‘re easy to read. This is why I finished the book very quickly.
For these reasons you all should go to readings to have the same chances, we had. I recommend that you all read books and if you have the chance to meet an author at a presentation like this then use it.
